Brightening with At-Home Teeth Whitening
Our at-home teeth whitening system can create a noticeable improvement in the appearance of your smile. To start the at-home teeth whitening process, impressions are made of the upper and lower teeth, and custom bleaching trays are made in one week.
Our cosmetic dentists will advise you about additional treatment details, such as how often and when you should wear your trays to achieve the most noticeable results. “Brightness” occurs for most patients using the at-home system in approximately two weeks.
Teeth Whitening Results
Teeth whitening results depend on compliance by the patient in wearing their whitening trays for the recommended number of days. Our cosmetic dentists can also provide information on maintaining the results of your teeth whitening treatment, such as:
- Refrain from foods and beverages that can stain your teeth
- Refrain from smoking and using other tobacco products
- Continue routine dental care with regular visits to your dentist
- Perform touch-up treatments every few months or as needed
Is Teeth Whitening safe?
Tooth whitening is a safe and effective way to brighten your smile, but sensitivity is a concern for some patients. Fortunately, heightened sensitivity after whitening is temporary and should not be cause for alarm.
It is safest to whiten teeth under the supervision of a dental professional who can ensure your teeth are healthy enough for treatment.
We offer customized take-home whitening kits that come with personalized application trays. These help to prevent whitening solution from leaking, which helps to reduce sensitivity along with preventing irritation to the gums and tongue.
We will provide you with additional instructions on how to minimize sensitivity during your time in our care.
How Long Should I Keep my Teeth Whitening Trays on?
Trays are worn for a specific amount of time each day. The amount of time you need to wear your trays will be dependent on factors unique to your situation. Some patients experience optimal whitening with just one to two hours of use a day. Others may require longer, even overnight applications to achieve desired results.
Should you Brush Your Teeth Before or After Whitening?
To remove excess whitening gel from your teeth, it is also a good idea to brush your teeth after you have removed your trays. This should be done with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to help prevent damaging enamel.
How Long After Teeth Whitening can I eat?
After tooth whitening, it is best to wait for at least 30 minutes before you eat or drink. This can help to prevent irritation to the teeth.
What Foods/Drinks can Stain Your Teeth?
Anything with color can stain your teeth. This includes natural color, such as can be found in coffee, tea, red wine, fruits, vegetables, berries, and various sauces. It also includes artificial colors such as can be found in candy, soft drinks, and other processed foods.
Sports drinks, sodas, and similarly carbonated beverages can assist in tooth discoloration. So too can certain medications, excess fluoride in water, and the simple process of aging. Tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, are a common source of tooth stains as well.
You can help to prevent tooth stains by avoiding processed foods, candy, soda, and sports drinks, and by brushing your teeth after every meal and snack. Be sure to wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing if you have consumed anything acidic. This will help to prevent damaging the enamel on your teeth.
Please note, some stains, such as those caused by nicotine, medication, or fluorosis may prove impossible to remove with topical whiteners. These types of stains may benefit more from dental veneers or another cosmetic procedure.
