Procedure Information

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. To ensure that your veneers blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth, your dentist will determine the appropriate color, shape, and size to which they should be crafted.

Prior to placing the veneers, your dentist will remove a small amount of the outer surface of the tooth to make room for the veneer. Porcelain veneers require minimal tooth alteration and provide incredibly durable, natural-looking results.

Porcelain veneers can be used to conceal a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Discoloration
  • Crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Chips or cracks
  • Wear and other concerns associated with aging

With porcelain veneers, imperfections are transformed into the smile you have always wanted. The veneers require minimal preparation with maximum results! Visit our smile gallery to see transformations achieved by previous dental veneers patients at our Greenville and Landrum, SC offices.

Porcelain Veneers Candidates

Most patients are suitable candidates for porcelain veneers. However, this procedure may not be appropriate for patients with certain dental health issues, including patients with extensive tooth decay, gum disease, and severe misalignment. Additionally, patients who suffer from chronic teeth grinding may not be good candidates for the dental veneers procedure.

How Should I Prepare for My Porcelain Veneers Procedure?

To have dental veneers placed, you will need to have healthy teeth and gums. If there are preexisting conditions, such as tooth decay or gum disease, these will need to be addressed before having veneers placed. Outside of that, there is nothing that you will need to do to prepare for your procedure.

Is the Dental Veneers Procedure Painful?

Having porcelain veneers placed requires the removal of a small amount of tooth enamel. This process is done under local anesthesthetic and will not cause discomfort, but if you feel nervous about your procedure, we would be happy to discuss the sedation options offered at our Greenville office.

We focus on IV sedation for complete patient relaxation. This service is provided by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists who are trained in the safe administration of deep sedation. Please let us know during your initial consultation if you would like to discuss this option in greater detail. And please note, sedation is only available at our Greenville location.

What Is Recovery Like After Dental Veneers Are Put In?

There is no recovery period following the placement of dental veneers. While some heightened sensitivity may be present for 24 to 48 hours, this should subside without any real complications.

If you have undergone IV sedation for your procedure, you will need to arrange for a ride home and take time to rest until the effects have worn off. This is, however, unrelated to and independent of recovery from the placement of veneers themselves.

How Will I Take Care Of My Porcelain Veneers?

Dental veneers are cared for in the same manner as your natural teeth. You will want to:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush your teeth after every meal and snack
Floss before you brush at least once daily
Visit our office for routine examinations and cleanings
You will need to avoid abrasive toothpaste, such as those containing baking soda or charcoal, and may want to reconsider astringent mouthwashes as well. We will provide you with individual instructions based on your oral health needs and other factors unique to your situation to help ensure your veneers last as long as possible.

Are There Any Risks With Porcelain Veneers?

While extremely rare, risks posed by porcelain veneers include unnatural-looking results, bite irregularities, and increased risks for tooth sensitivity. Veneers can also break, become discolored, or come loose and fall out.

The cosmetic dentists at Wood Creek Dental have decades of combined experience planning and placing veneers. We take time to ensure each veneer is entirely up to our expectations before we place them and use only the highest quality adhesives to guard against slippage.

We have partnered with trusted dental labs where veneers are crafted to our exact specifications, helping to produce the most natural-looking results – and we always seek patient approval before affixing the final restoration to the teeth.

Will I Ever Need to Come in for Maintenance on My Dental Veneers?

You should continue to maintain biannual appointments for tooth cleaning and examinations. These allow us to keep your teeth and gums in peak condition while also checking to ensure your veneers maintain their strength and appearance.

Porcelain is stain-resistant, but cannot be whitened once stained. It is also extremely strong but is not impervious to chipping, cracking, or breaking. Once a veneer becomes damaged or stained, you will need to have it replaced. This can be done one at a time whenever the need arises.

Dental veneers are expected to last for 10 or more years. You can help them last as long as possible by not chewing on ice or hard candy, seeking treatment for bruxism, keeping non-food items (like pens) out of your mouth, and following the care instructions provided by our office.
